The Task:
Design and build a lifting beam that would be used to install concrete wall panels that weigh 14,000 lbs. into an existing multi-story structure. The panels needed to be set under a six-foot overhang. The panels are 10 inches thick 12ft. tall and 10ft wide at the widest point.
The Solution:
Jones & Gardner designed and fabricated a double-beam lifting device that incorporated a trolley-mounted counterweight to allow lifting the wall panels from a point several feet away from the center of gravity of the panel. The total load of the panel and the lifting frame was balanced by adjustment of the counterweight position. After release of the panel, the empty lifting frame was rebalanced by moving the counterweight inboard. The panels were quickly and easily installed in the Broadmoor Hotel, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
