A Highway Contractor was constructing large multiple-span bridges that included the use of pre-cast deck panels spanning between the main girders. Setting these panels with conventional boom cranes would be difficult and expensive due to lack of access and the need for a very long reach to some portions of the bridges.
Jones & Gardner Engineering was asked to design and manufacture a jobsite crane that would run on top of the girders and transport the deck panels from the end of the bridge to any point on its surface.
The customer’s requirements were as follows: · Provide an adjustable width machine that could be operated on tracks supported at any spacing. · Incorporate a simple and inexpensive temporary track system. · Design for easy transport and simple width adjustment. · Provide controls for safe and user-friendly operation. · Design a machine that would require low maintenance.
Jones & Gardner Engineering designed and built a machine that met all of the customer’s requirements. The track spacing is adjustable from 24 to 40 feet. The crane has a lifting capacity of two tons and can move the payload horizontally, vertically or laterally to any point within its span. Placement of deck panels becomes a fast job for a two-man crew.
